Like many of my white peers, I’ve recently struggled to come to terms with the overwhelming inadequacy of my awareness and knowledge of systemic racism.
Walking through this world as a white, cisgender, heterosexual woman has granted me the privilege of being selective in where I put my time and emotional energy. When hearing/reading stories of racial injustices and police brutality, I’ve been able to offer my momentary indignation and “righteous anger”, then move on to the next item in the news cycle. After all, what could I, one person, do to change any of it?
As the public conversation about racism is shifting dramatically, it’s become embarrassingly obvious how my silence on the topic has been complacency, and a form of violence against the oppressed. I refuse to let that be the rest of my story.
Here is what I’ve committed to do:
Educate myself.
Listen to black voices while being open to critique and change.
Raise my son to be an antiracist.
Continue to build relationships in my community as an ally.
Speak up against racist ideas and use my vote to promote antiracist policies.
Amplify and hold space for black voices.
On that last point, I plan to use this page to gather and share resources for other allies in their journey to antiracism. As I continue to read, listen, learn, and grow I will keep adding links to material on this page. My hope is that my fellow white folks will find it helpful and enlightening. And I invite open conversation and collaboration.
